About Me

Liz and I
My name is Eric Hamm and I’m a tech consultant by trade. I am married to my beautiful wife Liz and we have two miniature dachshunds, Abi and Ginger. I live on the East Coast of the US, along the Blue Ridge Mountains. I’m a nature lover and an advocate of healthy living. I enjoy running, hiking, biking and spending time with my family. Living life to the fullest is my daily goal and helping others do the same is my passion.
My Journey (Thus Far)
I ate a lot of junk food as a child and didn’t treat my body as I should have. This continued into my teen years with drugs and alcohol and just all around self abuse. I was your typical rebellious teenager. But toward the end of high school I came to a moment when it became evident to me that I had taken things too far and that my life was going down hill. By God’s grace I was able to immediately give up all the unhealthy living and turn in my ways. I was blown away by the stark contrast that I felt when I started eating right, exercising and living for someone other than myself.
So my health was great but my grades were WAY below college material. I even failed the 10th grade. My last year in high school was better because of my lifestyle change but it was too late to make any real difference. So after high school I went to a community college for a year and a half to please my dad who wanted me to get some further education. I say “please my dad” because I have never liked school and just wanted to be done with it. After it was evident that I was wasting my time (I just wasn’t really trying) I dropped out and decided to get a J-O-B. This began my job hopping period.
For the first couple of years into my twenties I formed a pattern of working somewhere for about 6 months and then quitting and finding something completely different. I would work there for about the same amount of time and then quit and so continued the cycle. Just like school, I despised working in a J-O-B. I’ve always been an independent person and like to do things my way.
So what did I do for those couple of years? Well, let’s see. I’ll just list them out:
- Phone Polling
- Waiting
- Bank Teller
- Car Sales
- Toy sales
- Office supplies sales
- Catering
- Furniture Delivery
I think that’s it. And this was all in about 3 years time. So what did all these jobs have in common? They are all J-O-B’s. They were all jobs that require working for someone else who has control over what you do, when you do it, how you do it and when you don’t have to do it. For me, this kind of work is very burdensome and stifles the imagination. Just like high school I would look out the window (of whatever building I was in) and wish I could be free to go and enjoy the outside world. And when I say “the outside world” I don’t necessarily mean the outdoors (though I do love the outdoors) but more specifically I am just referring to freedom. I always felt more like a slave when I was working for someone else who had complete control over what I did. And not only that, I knew that my potential was never really being tapped.
So after a few years I felt that enough was enough. That alarm inside me was blaring; warning me of my dire situation. At the time I was working for an office supply company in their technology sales department. I kept getting requests from customers that wanted to pay me to come to their house and set up the computer I had just sold them. After a few requests the light went off in my head. I realized that I would make much more money in much less time and be able to work for myself if I started my one computer consulting business. So I quit my job and started getting the word out concerning my new business.
It was a little rocky at first but I was making twice the pay from the office supply job in very little time. I had MUCH MORE freedom and found my work to be a lot more rewarding. It was a constant challenge and, even though it was a little scary at times, I never got bored like I would after a few months into a J-O-B.
After a few years I decided that, though I was enjoying my current business, I didn’t want to be stuck doing it ten years down the road. So I started looking for some more passive forms of income. I have since then been working on different Internet based income sources as well as tapping the resources of my local consulting clients. I’ve found that by diversifying my income sources I have broadened my options, lessened my stress and grown my enjoyment of my daily work.
What I’ve found over the years is that the more I keep my eyes open to opportunities and keep my strength and perseverance to the highest levels I am constantly able to improve upon my lifestyle and freedom. I continue to eat healthy, exercise and keep my mind focused on the things that are truly important in my life. I had made the decision years ago to not settle for an average life and I’ve been holding to that promise. And as a result my life gets better year after year and my opportunities grow exponentially.
I started this blog so I could not only keep myself motivated but so I could share my experience with others in the hope that they could enjoy the same freedom that comes with the pursuit of excellence in everything you do. My hope is that others can grow with me on this journey of life. That we may make the most of everyday and rise above the challenges as we pusure a better life for ourselves and the ones we love.
