The 5 Year Plan

From the title of this post you are probably expecting some sort of success outline that will show the road to affluence in a half decades time.  Or maybe not… but I’m instead referring to the first part of my list that found it’s way to “Motivate Thyself” through Sean Platt.  That’s right, I’ve been tagged!

OK, so it’s not really that exciting, but I thought I’d participate in this meme since one of my best blogging buddies threw it my way.  So here goes…

6 random facts about me that won’t ever make it into the headlines anytime soon:

  1. The five year plan. I decided in high school that 4 years just wasn’t enough.  I said to myself, “Eric, you’re getting SO MUCH out of this place and your mind is sponging every last vapor of knowledge your teachers are sweating, so why don’t you stick around for one more year and absorb all that comes your way.”  Wait, that wasn’t me?!  Oh that’s right, I was stoned all the time and barely even made it to class.  Sleeping was mostly what I did.  None of that sponge stuff.  But hey, I graduated! :-)
  2. I didn’t get my driver’s license until I was 18. To be honest, I knew I wasn’t responsible enough to drive when I was 16 and didn’t want to inevitably drive drunk or stoned or both.  This was one of the few intelligent things I did during my latter adolescence.
  3. I sometimes watch old American Idol performances on YouTube when I’m bored. OK, so this is probably the most embarrassing of the bunch.  Wait, no, it’s DEFINITELY the most embarrassing of the bunch.  I don’t know what it is, I just like to watch the stuff that got the most applause and pretend that I’m up there taking it all in…”Thanks everybody, thank you!  You’ve been a great crowd tonight!!!  No, No, stop, stop, thank you, thank yo…”  Oh, sorry about that, I kind of lost myself in the moment…
  4. I’ve never stopped watching cartoons. It’s kind of funny when I talk to other adults who are around my age about childhood.  We’ll be talking about a certain cartoon and how we used to love it and everything.  And then I’ll mention another one that I loved and it will turn out to be something from 5 years ago.  There will be a silence and then another pause and that’s when the other person kind of fake smiles and then changes the subject.  No, actually I meet a decent amount of grown ups that still catch a few toons now and again.  They just hide behind the veil of their children…”Oh yeah, I caught that episo…I mean my daughter was watching that episode and I just happen to be in the room.  Yeah, that’s right, I was, uh, paying some bills and could hear it playing in the background.”  SUUUUUUURRRREEEEE!!! :-)
  5. I still get carded when I buy video games that are rated T for TEEN. Did I mention that I can pass for a TWEEN if I want?  Just a little shave and some casual clothing and I’m off to hang out at the mall.  But seriously, I was buying a computer game called ‘Call of Duty 3′ and the girl behind the counter made me whip out my license to prove that I was ‘of age’.  I mean come on, could a 16 year old pack so much peach fuz in the chin area?!  And I’m not talking the real soft kind, this is some home grown, Virginia style fuz.  Well, believe it or not, she wasn’t convinced until she saw the digits on the card.  And I still got a funny look as I was leaving as if to say, “Sure, we’ll play ‘fake ID’ today, but next time I’m calling security.”
  6. I haven’t been on a vacation in that last 5 years. Other than our honey moon and then a short trip a year later, my wife and I haven’t really gotten away for a half a decade.  Not that this is CRAZY or anything, but I think a little pitiful.  My consulting business was mostly to blame, though it’s just the excuse I use to cover up my workaholic mentality.  Not that I’m that guy who just has to climb that invisible ladder or anything.  I’m more that guy who sees amazing success JUST over the next hill.  Wait, do you see it!  No, no, that’s just Liz wondering when we’re going to take a vacation.  “Soon, honey.  Real soon.” :-)

(Here’s where I copy and paste the rules from Sean’s blog:)

THE RULES:

1. LINK TO THE PERSON WHO TAGGED YOU
2. POST THE RULES ON YOUR BLOG
3. WRITE SIX RANDOM THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF
4. TAG SIX PEOPLE AT THE END OF YOUR POST AND LINK TO THEM
5. LET EACH PERSON KNOW THEY ARE TAGGED AND LEAVE A COMMENT ON THEIR BLOG
6. LET THE TAGGER KNOW WHEN YOUR ENTRY IS UP
7. DON’T BREAK THE CHAIN (not actually a rule)

Tagees:

Let me start by saying, if you don’t get tagged, it’s not because I didn’t think about it.  I had a list in my head of about 20 bloggers that I wanted to mention, but 6 is the number, so 6 it is…

  • You’re it Matt!  Matt’s an all around great guy with a unique (in a good way) blog about his journey to build his fledgling computer consulting business.  He also covers some great all around ‘GEEKY’ topics.
  • Next we have Ross.  This guy is from the land down under and author’s a wonderful blog about personal growth.
  • Then we have Maya.  She’s a kindhearted blogger who writes about life and experiences and just about anything that is positive and encouraging.
  • Next on the list is Jeremy.  Jeremy is a writer who puts his talents to the action as he verbalizes his insight on his excellent blog.
  • Second to last on the list is my buddy Sid.  Sid is a writer and has an excellent life hacking style blog that always bares quality content and thought provoking ideas.  He’s a resident of Hawaii and therefore tops my list of bloggers to meet in person. :-)
  • And last, but not least, we have Neil.  This guy is not only passionate about blogging, but also about his ‘day job’.  I hear him often talk about how he tries to make the most of his opportunities in helping his customers and giving them the best service possible.  This stands out to me because it shows a character quality that will take him to many levels of success as well as demand respect from his fellow worker.  Good stuff! :-)

So that’s it, but as I stated above, I left out a bunch of bloggers worth every bit as much a mention.  But I don’t think reading a 20,000 word post is what you really want anyway.  So until next time…

  1. I really enjoy cartoons, bust mostly from the Cartoon Network when I get a chance to watch it.

I’m a little envious. I wouldn’t mind being carded. Everyone seems to think I’m in my thirties, but I just turned 24. Not quite as flattering as the other way around!

  4. Uh oh, I’ve been tagged….the pressure is on! Actually, it’s great to have a topic chosen FOR me so I don’t have to think of one. I’ll be posting my 6 within the next week.

  5. Writer Dad says:

Your Friendly Neighborhood Computer Guy: That’s how I felt about it too. At first I didn’t want to be tagged, now it’s like “Hey man, thanks for making it easy on me.”

Eric: Once you have kids, you’ll never have to make an excuse again. It’s one of the three best things about having them around. : >)

  6. Hi Eric, nice post :)

Hey don’t feel bad, I didn’t learn to drive until I was 24 – I stayed in student mode as long as possible and walked absolutely everywhere until the pressures of the rat race forced me to get a car & licence.

Not surprisingly I was so much fitter in those days!

You’re not alone on the cartoon thing either ;)

    p.s. Thundercats! Ho!

  7. Eric Hamm says:

@Bamboo Forest: I hear you. The Cartoon Network has the great classic stuff along with the more, kind of edgy (different) toons that are a nice change of pace.

@Emma: I know, the whole age thing seems like it leaves no one satisfied. Those who look younger want to look older and those who look older want to look younger. I don’t care about it too much anymore, but it does get old when I can just tell that the person I’m conversing with is assuming that I’m just out of High School. :-)

@Chris: Like I said, man, I’m not proud of this.

@Matt: Looking forward to it! :-)

@Sean: So what are the other two? I guess I’ll just have to find out for myself. :-)

@Bonnie: All I got to say is, “SHNARF!!!”

  8. Maya says:

Oh no, Eric – you did not :)

I guess I will have to take it up – for some reason some of your stories bring back some memories of mine ;)

Oh they do, do they?! :-) Eric.

Although I didn’t take five years, I can relate to the high school story. But that was a long time ago in a far away galaxy…

    5 year plan
Funny reading this today! I didn’t realize I was part of the 5 year plan. Today is my husbands birthday…. and I always recycle his birthday cards to fit the year. Just so happens this year his card was from 5 years ago ;-)
    Hmmm?

  12. Jeremy Day says:

    Hi Eric,

Aw shucks. I feel so special to be chosen. :-)

Well its a hard decision to do this because I have already participated in this meme once before. Here is the link…

    http://www.insightwriter.com/2008/11/28/ive-tagged-6-random/

Its a fun meme, and I hate to be a downer, but I think the buck stops here for me. ;-) Feel free to check out my previous 6 answers and let me know what you think.

You know what, Ill mention one more thing about me here. I love watching cartoons too. But I LOVE anime! I watched Dragon Ball Z, Gundam Wing, and Ghost in a Shell for a long time.

Now I dont watch much tv at all anymore, but sometimes I like to watch the old episodes. Gundam Wing and Ghost in a Shell are very futuristic, but the technology they have in those shows will happen someday. Food for thought….

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

I LOVED the way you put that. Very funny! I chuckled when I read it. :-)

@Lyne: “Just so happens this year his card was from 5 years ago ;-)

Funny how things work out that way! :-)

@Jeremy: Hey man, I totally understand. These things are just for fun anyway.

The only anime I really got into was the 80′s stuff, like Voltron and such. But I did love me some 5 lion action! :-) Eric.

    Dude, I loved Voltron! haha!
